It has been clear from the first mention of Employee Ownership within Scott & Fyfe that the purpose was to provide a better future for all employees.

With this in mind, it is highly important to the company that all employees should benefit in the success of the company. Therefore, after a successful year in 2014, Scott & Fyfe employees will receive a share of the profits via its Profit Share Scheme - 50% paid as a cash bonus and 50% paid in company shares.

This is a testament to the hard work and effort being put in by each and every employee. We acknowledge that market conditions remain challenging but the team here at Scott and Fyfe are intent upon building a bringter future together.

“Hard work and focus are allowing enabling our progress on the journey. Some of the highlights would include the capture of new accounts, successful new product launches and an expansion of our sales geography.”

Baby steps …

As we are fast approaching the end of our second year as an Employee Owned business, I am proud to say that we are starting to see good progress on the journey towards our strategic goals. These may be baby steps on an incredibly long journey, but we are at least moving forward. Some of the highlights would include the capture of new accounts, the regaining of lost accounts, successful new product launches and an expansion of our sales funnel.

The challenges we face in the short to medium term relate to preparing for and adjusting to a proliferation of our new products: productionisation challenges, manpower shortages, skills realignment, quality processes and procedures.

The turning of a new year affords us the opportunity to reset our teams and refocus our efforts. 2015 is the year where execution will come to the fore.

We know our purpose:

We are an International materials technology company who specialise in commercialising ideas and innovations through our global network of partners.

We have recently reset the activity streams that will deliver our long-term mission:

  • Deliver radically improved new product introductions through better Go-To-Market planning and execution

  • Develop the impact and efficacy of the Employee Forum to improve employee empowerment

  • Plan and deliver a program to dramatically improve operational performance

  • Continually ideate and deliver business and production innovations

We know where we are going and we know how to get there … The keys to our success will be the entire team reaching their milestones whilst helping each other along the way.

As a team, we look forward to going from “baby steps” to “great strides” in as short a period as possible.

Scott & Fyfe Limited has announced some significant governance changes effective as at 1.1.15.

A strategy review in November 2014 confirmed the innovation-led strategy at the heart of the company, enhanced by the employee engagement consequent on the move to employee ownership in January 2013. In order to promote the new ethos the strategic business unit (pod) leaders become business directors. Thus, Lesley Bayne (Operations), Paul McMullan (Composites), John Palmer (Loop), Roland Pap (Flooring), Michelle Quadrelli (Pipe Fabric Technology) are named Business Directors.

Company Chairman Professor Nick Kuenssberg said: “These developments reflect the increased participation of the management team in the formulation of strategy and delivery of results, mirroring the role of employees as owners and marking the transition from private to employee ownership.”

This year we celebrated 150 years in business and what a year it has been!

Following a complete transformation of our business 5 years ago and a switch to employee ownership in 2012 we are now finally on a track with a clear destination. The greatest transformation in our company history and one, I have to say, gives us reassurance for the future.

We would just like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of our colleagues who make work that much more enjoyable, our customers for their loyalty and patience and our suppliers for their support through this phase.

This has been a satisfying year but not one without its challenges. Despite these however, we have achieved a great deal and look forward to 2015 with renewed vigour.

Some of the highlights of 2014 include:

  • Reached 150 years of successful business
  • Launched our new website
  • Attended Employee Ownership events including an enlightening conference at Nottingham University. We will be hosting our own event in February 2015
  • Benefited from the skills of fabulous interns from around the globe
  • Held an Employee Ownership, Successful Succession Event here with CDS
  • Created a new business sector addressing innovative pipe relining
  • Launched new ground breaking products including Alphashield and Polymat FR
  • Carried out innovation workshops, partnership events with some major blue chip companies
  • Participated in a number of charity events including a very colourful “Wear It Pink” day in support of breast cancer
  • Generated a collaborative strategy to take us through to 2018, which is based on facts rather than pipedreams

With our current very loyal customers, supportive suppliers and not least our very flexible and motivated employees we will achieve our objectives.

We still have much to learn and there will be pain and discomfort along the way but our determination will get us there!

Again we’d like to wish all of our friends a Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous 2015.

On  November 17th and 18th I attended the Employee Ownership Association’s Annual Conference in Nottingham with John Palmer our Employee Director, Michelle Quadrelli Business Manager and John Lupton, our CEO and keynote speaker for the event.

The event was extremely popular with nearly 500 people in attendance,  highlighting the rising popularity of employee ownership in the UK. It was also very interesting to see the diverse range of sectors that have chosen to become employee owned using the various ownership models that are available.   The variety of employee ownership models available is I believe, one of the keys to its success as it ensures that there is a model to suit every company considering making this exciting step.

Throughout the event it was clear to see the benefits that the move can make, some of which are highlighted in the above infographic from the Employee Ownership Association

The award ceremony was a great part of the first day; we saw many worthy companies receive awards for their efforts and triumphs in the move to employee ownership.   Each of the winners stories were inspiring and it was great seeing other innovative companies being highly commended for their contribution.   It showed the best of what the future can hold for those of us who want to succeed. The awards included, Employee Ownership Champion, Employee Engagement, Employee Innovation, Rising Star, Public Service, EO Business of the year and the Philip Baxendale award.

The keynote speakers provided many stories and examples of their own experiences of Employee Ownership.  These were really interesting to hear, as were the individual seminars that took place through out the day. Our CEO, John was one of the final keynote speakers and his presentation went down very well as was clear to see through twitter.     A quote from his presentation that I feel sums it up for us very well for us as a business is:

“At Scott & Fyfe we were galvanised by the growing influence of Employee Ownership

in both terms of performance and engagement.”

All in all the day was full of enthusiastic and positive people with inspiring and thought provoking tales  to tell.   It has since been really interesting for us to compare the other companies experiences to our own as many were not dissimilar to ours, proving that it is not just a case of ticking the boxes.

For those  who could  not make  it to the event  here is one key  take away  from each of us  from the day:

“An effective and consistent induction programme in line with company vision is

essential for success in employee owned organisations."

    John Palmer, Employee Elected Director

"It was encouraging seeing how the different employee owned companies were

working through the different stages of their own journeys.”

Michelle Quadrelli, Business Manager

As for me, I think one of the key takeaways is that employee engagement is the

catalyst for a successful Employee Owned Company.
