I started my placement at Scott & Fyfe this year under the IDTC training programme. The IDTC is a programme which helps young people to get experience in the workplace by assisting them in gaining placements. I had worked in different areas before such as healthcare and the construction industry but I didn’t feel like they were for me. During my placement at Scott & Fyfe I carried out market research tasks to support the Pod Managers and really enjoyed the new challenge!

 

After my placement I was offered a temporary contract to work as ‘Market Insight & Sales Representative’ as part of the Pipe Fabric Technology Pod (PFT). In this role I analysed the Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) market as a whole and drew conclusions on how Scott & Fyfe should proceed.

 

Other duties in the role included helping out with the Marketing Communications for a new product: Alphashield

 

One of the highlights has been providing factory tours and assisting with academic courses we held for blue chip companies. Here I was able to teach groups the design tools we use in Scott & Fyfe and that was really exciting!!

 

After I completed my placement in the PFT Pod, I was delighted to be offered a permanent contract as ‘Production and Quality Co-ordinator’ as part of the new Productionisation Team in the company. My role is to be in charge of all trials being processed, ensuring that they all run smoothly and to the specifications required. It will be a great new challenge but I am confident it will be great.

We are pleased to announce the introduction of Polymat FR, an extensive chopped glass mat designed for RTM applications, as a new addition to our highly successful Polymat range.

 

The product will be targeted at applications requiring the highest level of fire performance, like rail interior parts that must comply with standards such as EN 45545.

 

Polymat FR is comprised of a 100% glass core, which is sandwiched between two layers of chopped strand mat. Typically, laminates will achieve up to 40% by weight glass ratio, allowing for high strength laminates. The product is also designed to offer fast and efficient resin flow, improving reliability of production when used with highly filled resins.

 

Commenting on the launch of this innovative textile product, Paul McMullan, Business Manager states that “early response from the market has been very positive and we are excited about the position this product will take within the fire performance composites segment”.

After 49 years with Scott & Fyfe our Electrical Supervisor, John Pate, retires.

 

John joined the company in 1965, following his father who had joined 10 years earlier.  John has worked at Scott & Fyfe since leaving school - and met his wife June here.  Between John, his dad and June they have 115 years service.

 

John's family joined us at his retiral presentation on Thursday 24th June when the many friends he has made at the company exchanged memories of his time here and wished him well for the future.  He will be greatly missed by his close team of engineers and the whole workforce. He kept the team together and was always willing to help!  His passion, determination and good spirit has played a big role in the Scott & Fyfe history.

 

We wish John continuing good health and great happiness in his well earned retirement.

Last week we visited the IFAT Show in Munich, Germany. IFAT presents the world’s most extensive display of innovations and solutions in the field of environmental technology. This trade show, with its coverage of water, sewage, waste and raw materials management, identifies strategies and applications for using resources in intelligent cycles in order to preserve those resources for the long term.

 

With Scott & Fyfe developing a range of products within the water conservation and pipe re-lining industry, this show presented a great insight into this growing market as well as allowing us the opportunity to meet with existing customers and new companies interested in pipe fabric technology products.

IFAT 2014

The show, which ran from Monday to Friday, was extremely busy this year with over 135,000 visitors and 3,081 exhibitors from 59 countries so gave us great exposure.
